A style of writing kanji that developed around 250 BCE.
This style evolved from tensho as the use of writing became more widespread in China, particularly for the purpose of creating tax records and other official documents (hence the English name of this style: clerical script). Kanji written in this style are usually wider than they are tall, and lines tend to be straight. Even today, this style is used for a lot of the public signage in both China and Japan.
