Calligraphy Workshops – Safety Guidelines

Whilst workshops are for you to enjoy, they are my place of work. The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 requires everyone to take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and of others who might be affected by their actions.

Calligraphy workshops may involve the following activities.

  • Using equipment and materials:
    • which may stain clothes or skin;
    • which may cause minor injuries like cuts;
    • which may aggravate existing skin or health conditions;
    • which may contain substances that can damage your health.
  • Using tables and chairs may be unstable or a trip hazard
  • Sitting in one position for extended periods

As I am responsible for caring for your safety, I have completed a risk assessment and have considered everyone’s safety and well-being in planning these workshops. I will explain how to use materials and equipment. I will also inform you of any specific risks in each session. I will ensure that a first-aid kit and PPE are available.

When in a workshop, it is your responsibility to

  • follow the workshop’s Code of Conduct
  • wear appropriate clothing and footwear
  • not eat and drink in the working area, other than bottled water
  • not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • use tools, equipment and materials safely and according to instructions
  • keep your belongings and materials tidy – don’t leave bags or equipment on the floor where they may trip other people
  • clean up any spillages immediately, with appropriate cleaning materials
  • be aware of risk from materials or any hazardous substances – use, store, and dispose of them properly, and make sure the room is adequately ventilated
  • wear any PPE if advised (e.g. masks, gloves, eye protection)
  • use electrical equipment safely and ensure that cables do not trail across the floor
  • move and handle equipment and furniture carefully – take care of your back
  • store furniture carefully – do not over-stack chairs.

In the case of fire, leave the room immediately and do not stop to collect your belongings.

Report any accidents, broken equipment or hazards to the instructor or a member of the workshop venue staff immediately.

If I think that:

  • you are not following safety instructions,
  • you endangering yourself or others, or
  • your behaviour breaks the Code of Conduct,

you will be asked to leave the workshop (at my sole discretion) and no refund will be given.

When you sign up for a workshop, I will ask you to indicate that you understand these guidelines, and understand your responsibility for your own safety.

I will also ask you to disclose any health information that might affect your participation. This health information doesn’t need to be detailed, but if there’s anything that I should tell a doctor or paramedic if something goes wrong, or if I need to know where your medication is, etc.

I will keep a record of your information in confidence, following GDPR rules. For more about how I protect your data, see the privacy policy.
