Notes There are several ways to say “can/be able to do something” in Japanese.

One way is to say: ~ことができます・~ko·to ga de·ki·ma·su.

To use this pattern, we need to know the dictionary or plain form of the verb. Here are the ~ます・~ma·su and dictionary forms of some common verbs.
します・shi·ma·su (= do) → する・su·ru
読(よ)みます・yo·mi·ma·su (= read) → 読(よ)む・yo·mu
書(か)きます・ka·ki·ma·su (= write) → 書(か)く・ka·ku
食(た)べます・ta·be·ma·su (= eat) → 食(た)べる・ta·be·ru

To say one can or cannot do these actions, we can use the following patterns.
することができます・su·ru ko·to ga de·ki·ma·su (= can do)
読(よ)むことができます・yo·mu ko·to ga de·ki·ma·su (= can read)
書(か)くことができません・ka·ku ko·to ga de·ki·ma·se·n (= can’t write)
食(た)べることができません・ta·be·ru ko·to ga de·ki·ma·se·n (= can’t eat)

Notes Another way to say “can/be able to do something” in Japanese is to use what is known as the “potential” form of verbs.

To make the potential form of a verb, we change the syllable before ます・ma·su in the ~ます・~ma·su form of the verb. Here are some examples.
話(はな)します・ha·na·shi·ma·su (= speak) → 話(はな)せます・ha·na·se·ma·su (= can speak)
行(い)きます・i·ki·ma·su (= go) → 行(い)けます・i·ke·ma·su (= can go)

The way that this syllable changes depends on the kind of verb.
食(た)べます・ta·be·ma·su (= eat) → 食(た)べられます・ta·be·ra·re·ma·su (= can eat)
見(み)ます・mi·ma·su (= see) → 見(み)られます・mi·ra·re·ma·su (= can see)

There are also a few irregular verbs, including します・shi·ma·su (= do) and 来(き)ます・ki·ma·su (= come):
します・shi·ma·su → できます・de·ki·ma·su
来(き)ます・ki·ma·su → 来(こ)られます・ko·ra·re·ma·su
