背臨

(RO: hairin; PR: "high-rin")
A form of rinsho in which one tries to write in the style of a classic piece without directly referring to it.

This is a common approach used by calligraphers for the creation of original works of calligraphy. By combining the styles of classic pieces, one can gradually develop one’s own distinctive calligraphic style.
